What’s My Skin Type?

Are you wondering what your skin type is? Susan Van Dyke, MD, a dermatologist of Van Dyke Laser and Skin Care in Paradise Valley said that human beings have four categories of skin types: normal, oily, dry, and combination. However, it doesn’t mean that if your skin is dry not, it will be dry forever. Skin type can change as a person ages. There are also other factors that can affect the person skin type like diet, genetics and certain health conditions. To understand the different skin types, each one is discussed below:

Normal
Individuals with normal skin have oil glands that produce sebum at a moderate rate. There is a sense of balance. The skin is not too dry and not too oily. Characteristically, the skin looks lump, moist, and vibrant.

Oily
Oily skin is caused by over production of sebum by the sebaceous glands. Excessive oil production can make the skin appear greasy, slippery and shiny. Often the pores are large and clogged. Skin experts believe that those with oily skin type are very prone to the development of acne because sebum can clog the inside of the skin causing pus-filled lesions. To improve skin condition, most dermatologists would recommend periodic herbal steam treatments and clay masks.

Dry
People with dry skin tend to develop more wrinkles, flaking and red patches. In women of color, skin can appear ashy or dull because of buildup of dead skin. Skin experts believe that individuals with dry skin require special skin care. Avoiding products with alcohol and scents can help improve the skin condition. Moreover, staying away from direct sun exposure and using moisturizers can help prevent the skin to becoming dry.

Combination
This skin type can be dry or normal in some areas, and oily in others especially the T-zone (nose, forehead, and chin area). Skin problems associated with this type of skin type are overly dilated pores, blackheads and shiny skin. Skin experts believe that people with this skin type would benefit from using slightly different types of skin care routines and products in different areas.

Determining Skin Type

To determine your type, you can use a clean facial tissue or paper to wipe your face. This test is best done in the morning, when you have just woken up. Press the piece of tissue paper on your skin and check if it sticks.  If you see patches of oil on the paper, you probably have oily skin. If it doesn’t stick and you do not see any oil on your t-zone, you are lucky because you have normal skin. Dry skin if the paper doesn’t stick at all.

Knowing your skin type is very important because it is the first step to having healthy skin. It will help you determine the right kind of cosmetics and skin care products that you can use on your skin.

Do Not Prick Pimples
When someone is under severe stress and he or she sees pimples developing on the chin or forehead, sometimes they prick and squeeze their pimples, thinking that it can reduce the size of the blemish. However, pricking is not recommended because the dirt from the nails can transfer to the inflamed skin, causing more harm than good.
Diversion

Use diversion to take your mind off your pimples. You can read a book or play video games. Do not look at the mirror to avoid temptation of pricking your blemishes. If you have no things to preoccupy yourself, you can just try sleeping, which is good for you.
